Note: Always make a backup copy before edit a game file.
Start the game, then begin any single mission and immediately save the game.
Quit the game. Locate the "*.save" file that - corresponds to that game
session in the "save_game" folder in the installed game directory.
Open the file with a text editor and search the following string:

[COLONY_GENERAL_DATA]

You will see some digits after that.
The format of the numbers should resemble:
722546.000000 43900.000000

To change the amount of money in the mission, modify the second number
to any value desired.

For example, change "43900.000000" to "4390000.00000".

Getting money easily:
Purchase the Atlantian Monument by building a school. Build it then construct
a warehouse. Then, build the Atlantian Treasury and fast forward the game.
You will get 80 Atlantis Crystals and you can sell them to the highest
bidder. You can earn approximately 5,000 gold in this way.
